How to Layer Necklaces (Without the Tangle): Lengths Chart + 6 Stack Recipes
The short answer
Pick 2 or 3 necklaces about 2 inches apart in length, such as 16", 18" and 20". Mix chain textures so each layer reads separately, and put your pendant on one chain only, usually the longest. Kinsora's stacks use exactly that spacing: Snake 16", Cable or Paperclip 18", and Pearl 20".

Necklace length chart: where 16", 18" and 20" sit
| Length | Where it usually sits | Kinsora chains at this length |
|---|---|---|
| 16" | At the collarbone | Snake Chain, Paperclip Chain |
| 18" | Just below the collarbone | Cable Chain, Paperclip Chain |
| 20" | Mid-chest | Pearl Chain |
All Kinsora chains are 18k gold PVD over stainless steel and $60 each. Each chain comes in the fixed lengths shown above. Shop all chains.
Fit varies. Where a necklace sits depends on your neck size and body shape, so treat the chart as a guide. Two easy ways to check:
- The string method: wrap a piece of string around your neck where you'd like the necklace to sit, mark it, and measure the string flat.
- Measure one you love: lay a necklace you already like flat and measure it end to end, clasp included.

The 3 rules of layering
1. Space them about 2" apart
Two inches gives each chain its own space, so the layers sit in tiers instead of piling on top of one another. That's why 16", 18" and 20" is the classic three-layer combination.
2. Mix textures
Different chain styles help each layer stand out. Kinsora's four chains each bring something different:
- Snake: smooth, flat and fluid; it catches the light.
- Paperclip: elongated oval links with a modern edge.
- Cable: classic round links that go with everything.
- Pearl: a beaded texture that softens the look. (It's a beaded gold chain, not real pearls.)
3. One focal pendant
Choose one pendant and give it room. Every Kinsora set hangs its pendant on the longest chain, the Pearl Chain at 20", because the lowest layer has the most space for a pendant to hang and keeps the shorter chains clean above it. Want to try something different? Clipping the pendant onto your shortest chain draws the eye up toward your face. Treat that as a variation; the longest chain is the easy default.
How to keep layered necklaces from tangling
No layered look is completely tangle-proof, but these habits help a lot:
- Mix textures and weights. Chains of the same style slide into each other more easily.
- Clasp them in order, shortest first, then work outward.
- Leave them on. Because Kinsora pieces are waterproof, your stack can stay on through showers and the gym. Taking off and re-layering every day is where most tangles start.
- Store pieces separately when you do take them off.
- Consider a layering clasp or separator if tangles still bother you. These are sold by other retailers; Kinsora doesn't make one.

faq
What lengths should I layer necklaces?
Space them about 2" apart. For three layers, 16", 18" and 20" is the classic combination; for two, try 18" and 20".
Where does an 18-inch necklace sit?
Just below the collarbone on most people. Where it lands depends on your neck size and body shape.
How many necklaces should I layer?
Two or three is the easiest place to start. A Kinsora Daily Set has two chains, and a Stack has three.
Which chain should hold the pendant?
Usually the longest, so the pendant has room to hang. Every Kinsora set puts it on the 20" Pearl Chain.
How do I keep layered necklaces from tangling?
Mix chain textures, clasp them shortest first, and store them separately. Because Kinsora is waterproof, you can leave your stack on, which avoids daily re-layering.
Can I mix 14k and 18k gold PVD in one stack?
Yes. Our heart pendants are 14k gold PVD, and they're styled on 18k gold PVD chains in our sets. The tones differ slightly, so mixing reads as intentional, layered warmth.
Can I shower in a layered stack?
Yes. Kinsora pieces are made for showers, sweat and pool days. Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals and long chlorine soaks.
